LA MARSEILLAISE DES CHEVALIERS CATHOLIQUES THE OFFICIAL ANTHEM OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE The text of the anthem is a modified form of a royalist version of La Marseillaise used by the Vendéen when fighting against the anti-royalist forces in France. The tune is the same. The text is maintained in French in part because of the history of the piece, and also because of the importance of the French language to the history, heritage, and culture of the Americas. While English and Spanish are today the most widely-spoken languages in the Americas, the French language is one of the official languages of Canada, and it is also still culturally important in certain American States, such as Maine and Louisiana. As another point of relevance of French culture to Catholics in the Americas, the Proto-Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Bardstown, Kentucky, houses many paintings donated by the exiled French Royal Family (as well as by Pope Leo XII and the Royal Family of the Two Sicilies).
